With a history spanning over 8 years, New Horizon Trust is a charity committed to ensuring young people in Nottingham are empowered to build a bright future, regardless of their background or circumstances. It’s our mission to provide young people with access to appropriate, high-quality services in their local community.

We offer support, advice and organise activities to equip young people with the vital life skills needed to engage in education, volunteering and employment. Underpinning everything we do are three core values:

The key purpose of youth work is to “Enable young people to develop holistically, working with them to facilitate their personal, social and educational development, to enable them to develop their voice, influence and place in society and to reach their full potential.”

We attempt to apply this by:

  • Building young people’s self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Developing young people’s ability to manage personal and social relationships.
  • Creating learning opportunities for young people to develop new skills.
  • Encouraging positive group atmospheres.
  • Building the capacity of young people to consider risk, make reasoned decisions and take control.
  • Helping young people to develop a ‘world view’ which widens horizons and invites social commitment.
  • Tackling knife crime, misuse of drugs and alcohol, hate crime and gang culture.
  • Support young people who are suffering from mental health i.e social exclusion, depression & anxiety.

NHT is at the heart of one of the most deprived areas in Nottingham. The area has a high demographic of South Asians between 36%-62%. In terms of deprivation levels for unemployment, income and health, it falls within the top 10 most deprived areas of the UK.

The number of young people involved in crime has increased over the years by 16%, most of them are under the age of 21. Young people are falling victim to knife crime, drugs and gang association along with various forms of anti-social behaviour.

Many young people get involved in these activities because they don’t have a safe and secure place to go, they believe that being in a gang is cool, makes them feel brave, they feel like they are in charge of the area and they also feel fearless about get caught or ending up in prison.

Unfortunately, our young people are getting caught up in a life of crime and some don’t see a way out, this is due to a lack of support and guidance available. Youth clubs have closed down due to budget cuts, youth workers made redundant and our young people are suffering as a result.

We run a Youth Club for teenagers aged 11-16 on a weekly basis. We believe that youth activities are very important for every youth group. Generally, activities are planned after discussion with the young people to meet their needs and interests. Activities are used to provide fun and enjoyment, to engage young people and enable them to develop and learn new skills. Our youth club activities include; Table tennis, table football, badminton, PS4, Dodgeball, hockey and boxing.

The youth club attracts over 30 young people. The youth club is not just about just playing, it provides young people with a safe and secure environment, it keeps young people off the streets away from trouble. It brings young people together from different backgrounds to engage and make new friends. It gives them a chance to express themselves without the fear of being judged.

Our young people are our future leaders.

We need your support so we can continue to grow our youth club and attract more young people by having more activities/facilities on offer.

Our young people have requested the following:

  • New Pool Table
  • New Air Hockey
  • New Table Football
  • Trip to watch a live football match
  • Indoor sports equipment

Please help us so that we can guide, support and develop our young people into good citizens.
